In a recent Instagram poll over 66% of you though that self-care was expensive. In the age of Instagram, self-care as become synonymous with indulgences like massages, facials, fancy products, boutique workout classes and lavish vacations.
That all sounds great if you have tons of disposable income. But for most of us, spending serious cash on self-care just isn’t realistic.
So we’ve put together some ways to enjoy self-care that you can enjoy on a budget!
Take a walk around the block, sit in the grass, hike a local trail or just let the sun shine on your face for a few minutes.
Take a bath
Bonus points if you light a candle. Dim the lights, close your eyes and just enjoy a few moments of quiet. Submergence in water can reduce pain and inflammation and also calm the nervous system, reducing the levels of stress and anxiety in the body and improving your mood.
Have a cuddle
Snuggle up next to your partner, your child or even your BFF. Cuddling releases oxytocin, a feel good hormone, that also helps with reducing stress.
Read a book
Many people overlook the benefits of reading a book in their self-care routine. It not only relaxes you, but also keeps your mind fresh and active. What’s more, you can curl up in your favourite spot with your favourite candle, and good drink, which in itself brings a wealth of mental benefits.
Take a social media holiday
Mindlessly scrolling through social media has been linked to lowered self esteem, sleep issues and increased FOMO. Try putting your phone in a drawer for a few hours or a whole day, or if that’s not possible removing the offending apps for a while.
Do some journaling
All you need is a pen and some paper to get started. Journaling can be a therapeutic practice that helps you understand thought patterns, work through difficult emotions, reflect on certain events or cultivate more gratitude in your everyday life.
