Wax Melts 101

At Six Seven Twenty we pride ourselves in making highly scented botanical soy wax melts for you to enjoy in your home or to give a special person a great gift.

What are wax melts?

Wax melts are wickless, scented pieces of wax that are warmed up in a burner with a tealight underneath. As the wax melts the fragrance is released and fills the room with scent. When you've had enough you simply blow out the tealight and allow the wax melt to harden to be used again. Once the wax starts to lose it's scent you simply remove and replace with fresh wax. They can provide a sense of warmth and comfort and encourage relaxation in your home.

Wax melts versus candles

There is no right or wrong choice - it is down to personal preference but wax melts are often cheaper than candles, and as they’re not actually burnt by the flame they last longer gram for gram. Plus as they’re smaller you can change your scent more often if you’d like to.

When should I change my wax melt?

The simple answer is when you can no longer smell it. It will vary depending on the size and type of wax used. For our soy wax melts we would expect each of our hearts to last 5-7 hours and each of our bees to last 7-10 hours, but this can vary depending on your burner.

How do I change my wax melt?

Once you can no longer smell the melt and you’re ready to change there are a few easy ways to do this:

  1. Pop in some cotton balls while it’s still liquid and soak it up

  2. Let the wax cool, then start to warm it again and just when you see liquid forming at the side slide it out with some kitchen roll - be careful not to burn yourself though

  3. Allow to cool completely and scoop out with a spoon

Why Soy Wax melts?

Soy wax is a natural product produced from the soya bean. Another common type of wax used in melts is paraffin wax which is made from the waste products left over from crude oil when producing petroleum. Paraffin wax can have many negative side effects including headaches, nausea, respiratory disease, digestive disorders and many many more. Soy wax has no negative side effects, and has a great hot and cold scent throw.

If you are going to use wax melts, stick to natural based waxes such as soy wax, coconut wax or beeswax based products. We only work with sustainable, ethically sourced soy wax.
